The United States is concerned about the security of the Aleutian Islands. Writes about this American columnist Tyler Rogoway. In his opinion, the Pentagon should pay special attention to the most remote parts of the archipelago, namely “one of the US strongholds closest to Russia in the North Pacific Ocean, Shemya Island. According to the Western expert, it is he who can become the object of an armed seizure by Russia or China during a potential war.
“MK” asked the captain of the 1st rank of the reserve, Vladimir Gundarov, to comment on whether there is a rational grain in the words of Rogovay, or the United States is in vain to panic.
– Undoubtedly, Russia has a reason to land a landing there – 280 years ago, on October 29, 1741, Vitus Bering discovered this island and named it after a Christian saint. But I, of course, say this as a joke, because objectively we have no other reason to land there, – said Vladimir Gundarov. – But the Americans have a reason to pay attention to this island and increase the garrison there.
Now, according to the census, only 27 people live on Shemie. And during the years of the Cold War, there were one and a half thousand people. In 1994, when the “cold war” seemed to be over, the garrison was reduced and people were taken out of there. But the airfield and early warning station for the missile attack remained. In general, for the United States, this place is very interesting and very convenient, since it is located only a thousand kilometers from the main base of our submarine forces in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Shemya is ideal for observing the Kura missile range, the battlefield where the warheads of all our missiles fall, which we launch from the White or Barents Seas during testing. This, by the way, is not the closest island to Russia, but at the same time, it is closer to us than to the United States.
But China is very far from this base, and they do not need it. In my opinion, the statement of a Western observer is nothing more than an information provocation.
